We will also tell you about the best online dispensary in Canada where you can order premium hashish.
What is Bubble Hash?
Bubble hash, also called ice water hash, is a solventless cannabis extract that comprises trichomes that are separated from the plant material through physical or mechanical extraction methods.
This concentrate, like the regular hashish used by humankind throughout history, doesn’t require solvents to extract.
But unlike the regular type of hash, you don’t have to go through the arduous process of accumulating the resin on your hands as you handle cannabis buds.
Instead, you only need icy cold water, filter bags or bubble hash bags, high-quality cannabis bud and agitation. The result is one of the most perfect dabs you can have.
Bubble hash gets its name from the way it bubbles when heated. Regular hashish tends to simply melt instead.
Ice water hash isn’t new in the market. This type of concentrate hit the market in the 1990s, but the process was allegedly invented in the late 80s.
Sadhu Sam is credited with the invention of the original technique. Other innovators later improved it, including Bubbleman, whose filtration bags popularized this extraction process.

Here’s our step-by-step guide to making ice water hash.
1. Collect all the needed materials
It’s more convenient to have all the materials you need in one spot before starting. Have a bucket, ice, water, bubble hash bags, cannabis flower, a wooden stirring spoon with a long handle and nonstick drying sheets.
2. Put everything together
Layer your micron filter screens into the bucket, starting with the smallest size. Secure the bags over the rim of the bucket.
Add the ice-cold water into the bucket until half full, then add the weed and ice until the bucket is full.
If it is not, you can add more ice-cold water. Make sure all the cannabis buds are submerged.
3. Agitate the mixture
Using the wooden spoon, stir the mixture for up to 20 minutes, agitating the plant material to allow as many trichomes as possible to break away from the flowers.
The ice will melt as you mix. Add more to keep the water as cold as possible.
You can also use an electric hand mixer as well for this step.
4. Drain the water
After stirring for the recommended time, it’s time to strain the water from each filter screen and collect the ice water hash.
You can do this by taking out one bubble hash bag at a time. Take the first bag, flush it with the ice water and shake it to ensure you get the last of the trichomes.
Allow the water to drain and set it aside. Repeat this for every bag. The smallest mesh bags will have the best hash.
5. Dry the collection
Once every bag is fully drained, remove the collected trichomes and spread them on nonstick drying sheets. Ensure you don’t mix the different hash grades.
Once dry, you can roll the hash into balls or press flat like regular hash. Ensure you store the weed hash in airtight containers in dark, dry spaces.
Choosing the Best Bubble Hash Bag Size
Bubble hash bags, also called bubble bags or screen filters, are the most important elements in the ice water hash process.
Having the right micron size directly affects the quality and yield of the process. But what is a micron, and what does it mean?
Micron is a measurement unit equal to 1/1000th of a millimetre. In this case, it refers to the space between each hole in the filter screen.
Ice water hash bags are typically sold in kits of 4 or 8 bags that you can arrange in series to yield different qualities of the extract.
Typically, these are between 15 and 220 microns, with size 15 being the smallest and 220 the largest. The smaller micron sizes produce better-quality hash but only in low quantities.
So, what size bubble hash bag should you use?
Several factors determine the optimal filter screen bag micron size. However, high yields of quality bubble hash are attained with 73 and 90-micron sizes, according to most cannabis enthusiasts.
However, using several-size bags means you can get different qualities of water hash in one process. Bubble hash experts use a 6-star rating to grade the different qualities.
6 Different Qualities of Bubble Hash
Here are the different grades of ice water hash you can get when you buy weed online in Canada:
6-star/ Full melt hash
This is the crème de la crème of ice water hash. It is also known as ‘full melt hash’ as it does not leave residue on the nail when dabbing.
Full melt hash doesn’t have any plant materials in it or any other contaminants. It can also be made into rosin.
5-star hash
Most of the bubble hash labelled as ‘full melt’ in the market is actually 5-star hash. This is also mostly used for dabbing.
It only has a small amount of plant material and can also be used to make rosin.
3 and 4-star hash ‘half-melt hash’
As the name suggests, this grade is not suitable for dabbing as it will leave lots of residue. However, it’s great for making bricked hash.
You can use it to top up bowls or press it to make rosin.
1 and 2-star bubble hash
These grades will have more plant material than trichomes. That doesn’t mean that they have no use.
1 and 2-star bubble hash works well for topping up bowls and making edibles.
Top 5 Tips for Getting the Best Bubble Hash
Making ice-water hash is pretty straightforward. However, as expected, most people won’t get the desired results the first time they try.
Here are a few tips on how you can get the most out of the process:
1. Start with high-quality weed
As mentioned before, the quality of the input determines the output. So try to start with the best quality weed you can get when you buy weed online in Canada.
When you order weed online, look for the most resinous buds as they will have the most trichomes.
2. Check your water source
Most of the bubble hash you get at an online weed dispensary is made using ultra-purified water.
While tap water works just fine for the most part, the chlorine, fluoride, and other compounds may adversely affect the taste of the bubble hash.
3. Fluffier is better
Fluffier cannabis buds are better for making ice-water hash than denser buds. This is because it takes less effort to break trichomes off fluffier buds.
When dealing with dense nugs, you may have to use more effort to free the trichomes, which only break up the flowers into smaller plant material. This lowers the quality of the hash.
4. Keep things as cold as possible
Cold from the ice freezes the trichomes, making them easy to snap when agitating. This means you will get more bubble hash with colder temperatures.
5. Use a freeze dryer when possible
You have to dry the bubble hash yield before you can consume it. While air drying works fine, there are faster and better ways to do it.
Freeze dryers can cut hash drying times. Also, the lower temperatures can help maintain terpenes, especially if you are making live hash.
